|Recreation - Coach Information|
Note to Parents
Our Recreation Commission programs rely on volunteer parent coaches. We understand that not everybody is able to set aside the time each season to be a head coach, but please help out any way you can. Even if you're unable to be at every practice or every game, you can still be an assistant coach who can help out the head coach when needed. Please speak with your coach and see in what way you can help. Our parent coaches volunteer their time and talent and we need to make sure that we are supportive of their efforts. With the cooperation of all the parents, we can ensure a positive and successful season.
All coaches must fill out Intent to Coach forms, be fingerprinted/background checked, complete an online concussion awareness course and attend a Rutgers S.A.F.E.T.Y. Coaches Clinic. More information about each requirement can be found below:
Intent to Coach Forms
All coaches must fill out an Intent to Coach form for each sport, each season. In addition to this Intent to Coach form, each coach must also review and agree to the Code of Ethics.
Please click the following links for that Intent to Coach form:
If you have already been fingerprinted (i.e. you work as a teacher or police officer or you have already been fingerprinted as a volunteer coach) you will only need to fill out our annual background check form. These forms must be picked up at the Recreation office, and may not be e-mailed or faxed.
If you have not been fingerprinted, please print out the fingerprinting form from the following link: http://www.njsp.org/info/pdf/042012_univform_ysb.pdf. IN BOX #7, PUT B08002, THIS IS OUR VRN#. THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. YOU MUST ENTER IT EXACTLY AS IT APPEARS HERE, NO SPACES, NO DASHES. CAPITAL B. IT IS THE NUMBER 0 NOT THE LETTER O. IF YOU DO NOT FILL OUT BOX #7 PROPERLY, WE WILL NOT RECEIVE YOUR RESULTS AND YOU WILL NEED TO RE-DO THE FINGERPRINTING. You will need to fill out this form and bring it with you to your fingerprinting appointment. You can make an appointment online or by phone, the details are at the bottom of the form. The closest Sagem Morpho location in Paramus is on Forest Ave. When you attend your appointment, please be sure to bring a valid government issued photo ID or you will be turned away. If you do not attend your scheduled appointment, do not bring a filled out form or bring proper identification, you will be charged an $11 fee on top of the $26 fingerprinting fee.
The fingerprinting will cost $26 since you are a volunteer and not an employee. This cost will be reimbursed by the Recreation Commission. In order to be reimbursed, you must bring a copy of your fingerprinting form AND the receipt to the Recreation office after your appointment so copies can be made and added to your file. Reimbursements will not be processed without a receipt. Any fees incurred for missing an appointment or failing to have proper documentation will NOT be reimbursed. A purchase order will be created by our Finance Department and will need to be signed and returned so we can process a check.
Rutgers Certification Information
Our coaches are also required to attend the Rutgers Youth Sports clinic. If you have already attended, please make sure that the Recreation office has a copy of your card on file. If you need to complete the Rutgers Youth Sports clinic, you can find information about that program at the following site: http://youthsports.rutgers.edu/. The cost for the Rutgers course varies by hosting organization, but is generally $35-40. Pick a local class and register with the hosting organization. This cost will be reimbursed by the Recreation Commission. In order to be reimbursed, you must bring a copy of your Rutgers card AND the receipt to the Recreation office after your course so copies can be made and added to your file. Reimbursements will not be processed without a receipt. The Paramus Recreation Commission will not reimburse coaches who take the Rutgers course for the PJBL. A purchase order will be created by our Finance Department and will need to be signed and returned so we can process a check.
Concussion Awareness Course
To help minimize the risk of concussion related injuries, the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association is now requiring all coaches to take the National Federation of State High School Associations’ free on-line course “Concussion in Sports – What you Need to Know.”
This course provides critical information designed to minimize the risk of serious consequences due to concussions. The Mayor & Council of Paramus, along with its’ Recreation Commission, believe that it is important that all Paramus Recreation Coaches become informed and aware of the proper precautions to take to keep our athletes safe.
A second course that is also worthwhile is “A Guide to Heat Acclimatization and Heat Illness Prevention.”
Starting with the Paramus Recreation Commission’s Fall Programs of 2013, all coaches must take the online concussion course and at the conclusion print out the certificate and drop it off at the Recreation Office. Coaches will not be allowed to coach until this requirement has been met, no exceptions.
Coaches and parents alike can access these free NFHS courses online at www.nfhslearn.com. In the top left corner of the page, next to the NFHS logo, click on “Courses” and select the desired course under the “Free Courses” heading. In order to complete the course, you must create an account which will allow you to manage your courses and access your certificates of completion. If you are asked for a “Primary Position,” you should enter “Coach” and “Paramus Recreation Commission.”
After any serious injuries or accidents, coaches must send an accident report to the Recreation Office so it can be kept on file. Please download the form here and e-mail it to Bob Cowper at
