Advisory Concerning the Governor’s Executive Order No. 109 Temporary Suspension of Blue LawsExecutive Order No. 109

Governor Christie signed Executive Order No. 109 recently which temporarily suspends the restriction on certain Sunday sales contained in N.J.S.A. 40A:64. Accordingly and based upon the contents of the Executive Order the Borough of Paramus will suspend enforcement of the statute which prohibits the sale of the following items: “clothing and wearing apparel, building and lumber supply materials, furniture, home or business or office furnishings, household, business or office appliances…”  The statute also defines each of those categories of items.

However, the remainder of the Paramus Blue Laws have not been suspended and are still enforceable.  Specifically, any items not listed in the state statute would still be prohibited to be sold on Sundays in Paramus. Therefore, the prohibition of the sale of items such as books, jewelry, recreational and athletic equipment, automobiles, etc.  has not been affected by the Governor’s Executive Order.  In addition, the prohibition of employment has also not been suspended and is still enforceable.
