Public Health Notice

PARAMUS COMMUNITY HEALTH DAY
OCTOBER 15TH
4:00pm - 8:00pm

The Paramus Board of Health has announced plans for its annual Community Health Day. “We hold this free program once a year to provide our residents with a comprehensive and varied program of health services and screenings,” said Health Officer, John Hopper. “The basic goal of the screenings is the early detection of chronic illness and prevention of disease, disability and premature death.” Community Health Day will be held this year at the Paramus Life Safety Building on Carlough Drive. The program will be open to the public from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 15, 2008.

Early detection of cancer promotes the increased possibility of cure. Various types of cancer screenings to be held include breast cancer, oral cancer and skin cancer. Hemoccult slides will be given for use at home to detect blood in the stool, an early sign of colon cancer. Blood pressure screening will be offered to detect hypertension, a major cause of heart disease and stroke. No advance appointments are necessary.

Additional services include: hearing evaluation for adults, podiatric screening, vision and glaucoma screening, and local area hospitals will be on hand to provide information and promote their many services that they offer.

The Community Blood Mobile will also be on site for blood donations and a large selection of literature on health topics will be free to participants.

Influenza and Pneumococcal Vaccine

The Paramus Board of Health has announced that it will offer influenza and pneumococcal vaccinations to Senior Citizens 65 and over and adults suffering from chronic illnesses, according to John Hopper, Borough Health Officer. Inoculations will be given at Paramus Borough Hall on Saturday morning, October 25th. As this program will not serve clients who are HMO members, Senior Citizens and chronically ill residents who participate in an HMO need to contact their medical physician directly for flu or pneumococcal immunizations.

Flu shots are recommended for adults who suffer with such chronic conditions as heart disease, diabetes, kidney ailments or any condition which compromises respiratory function. Vaccination is also recommended for Senior Citizens 65 and over because this group is at high risk for complications from influenza and pneumonia, Hopper noted. All participants must be age 65 or over and must show proof of age and Paramus residency. Chronically ill residents under 65 must also present a current note from their physician indicating the need for immunization. Persons allergic to chicken, eggs, or who have a fever, respiratory infection, have received any other vaccine during the 14 days prior to the program, have had an allergic reaction to a previous dose of influenza vaccine or have a past history of Guillian Barre syndrome should not receive the vaccinations.

Mr. Hopper advises that senior citizens and chronically ill residents should receive a flu shot annually. Pneumococcal vaccination is also recommended for adults over the age of 65. For chronically ill residents under the age of 65, there is a charge of $10.00 for pneumococcal vaccination along with a current doctor’s note stating chronic illness. Certain groups may be advised to have a second pneumococcal shot. If requesting a second shot for pneumonia, please call the Board of Health office for more information. Residents must register for the program by calling 201-649-0755. Hopper advised that residents should have Medicare numbers available when calling to register, and should bring their Medicare cards with them on the day of the program. Those persons wishing to receive flu vaccination only, should arrive at Borough Hall between 8:00 am and 9:30 am on October 25th. Those persons wishing to receive both flu and pneumococcal vaccination should arrive at Borough Hall at 9:30 sharp. Pneumococcal vaccinations will not be administered before 9:30 a.m. The members of the Paramus Board of Health urge all senior citizens 65 and over to take advantage of these immunizations.
